It was just after midnight in Indianapolis, and 69-year-old Perry Tole was focused on his job. The truck driver, collecting used cooking oil from a hotel loading dock, found himself in a situation that would turn violent and life-altering. The man who approached his truck was Mark Sanchez, a former NFL quarterback and current Fox Sports analyst. What began as a dispute over a parking spot escalated into a frightening physical confrontation that left both men injured, but the most severe and lasting wounds were inflicted upon Tole.
Sanchez, in town to cover a football game, was initially seen by witnesses acting erratically, doing wind sprints in the alley where Tole was parked. The encounter quickly spiraled out of control. Sanchez allegedly climbed into the cab of Tole’s truck, preventing him from calling for help. The details that emerged from court documents and police affidavits paint a harrowing picture of the struggle. Surveillance footage from the area shows Mark Sanchez grabbing Tole and throwing him against a wall before body-slamming him to the ground in the alley. In a desperate attempt to stop the attack, Tole pepper-sprayed the 38-year-old former athlete. However, the spray only briefly paused the advance. Sanchez, according to the victim’s account, kept coming.

It was at this moment that Tole, believing “this guy is trying to kill me,” pulled out a knife. As Sanchez came at him, Tole stabbed the former quarterback two or three times in the chest and torso. During the chaotic struggle, Tole was thrown into a dumpster and onto pallets on the ground. He later told police that while he was down, he could only see Sanchez’s feet “coming at him.”
Once he managed to get back to his feet, he stabbed Sanchez again in what he insists was a continued act of self-defense. A friend of Tole later revealed that the truck driver, a mild-mannered man who avoids conflict, said his “faith guided my hands” to protect himself that night.

While Mark Sanchez suffered serious stab wounds that required hospitalization, the injuries sustained by Perry Tole were described by prosecutors as “very severe” and have permanently disfigured him. He suffered a severe laceration to the side of his face, a deep wound that penetrated all the way through his left cheek and impacted his jaw, mouth, and tongue. Graphic photos of Tole in the hospital, shared by his family with the media, show the gruesome extent of the damage, with an enormous cut across his face.
The physical and emotional toll on Tole has been immense. His attorney stated that the scarring is permanent and the injury currently affects his speech. He is in significant pain, deals with considerable swelling, and is “really shaken up” from the traumatic event. The consequences of the attack have also intruded on his personal life in the most heartbreaking ways. His son is getting married soon, but due to the severity of his injuries, Tole will not be able to attend the wedding, a fact that has left him deeply saddened.
In the wake of the incident, Mark Sanchez was arrested and his charges were upgraded from misdemeanors to a Level 5 felony count of battery involving serious bodily injury, which could carry a one to six-year prison sentence. Perry Tole, from his home where he is recovering with his wife, is reportedly “thankful to be alive.” He has since filed a civil lawsuit against both Sanchez and Fox Corporation, alleging that the network should have known about Sanchez’s “propensity for drinking and/or harmful conduct.” The legal process continues, but for the 69-year-old truck driver, the physical and emotional scars from that night in Indianapolis will last a lifetime.
