Derrick Perry: Walmart Marine Hero in Traverse City Stabbing

It was just another Saturday afternoon at the Walmart in Traverse City, Michigan, before tragedy ensued, and it could have been so much worse if not for Derrick Perry. Around 4:43 p.m. on July 26, 2025, the store erupted into panic as a 42-year-old man, later identified as Bradford James Gille, began slashing through shoppers with a folding knife. The attack was random, brutal, and terrifying. Eleven people, ranging from a child to elderly shoppers, were stabbed, some with life-threatening wounds. Blood stained the grocery aisles, screams filled the air, and for a few horrifying minutes, it seemed like no one could stop the violence.

The Man Behind the HeroicsWhy This Story Matters

Enter Derrick Perry. An ex-Marine with dreads and a no-nonsense demeanor, Perry wasn’t about to let this unfold without a fight. While others ran, he moved toward the danger. According to witnesses, Perry drew his handgun, not to shoot, but to intimidate, and helped corner the suspect alongside other brave bystanders. One of them, Matt Kolakowski (another Marine veteran), even used a grocery cart as a makeshift weapon, ramming the attacker in the ankle before Perry and others pinned him down in the parking lot. The whole thing was over in minutes, but the impact would last much longer.

The Man Behind the Heroics

So who is Derrick Perry? Details are still emerging, but we know this much: he’s a former Marine, the kind of guy who doesn’t freeze in a crisis. Witnesses say he was calm under pressure, working with others to disarm Gille without firing a single shot. That restraint might’ve saved lives, not just the victims’, but also the suspect’s, ensuring he’d face justice in court rather than in a body bag.

🚨 HERO ALERT: Meet Derrick Perry, the GOOD GUY with a firearm who helped subdue the Walmart mass st*bbing suspect in Traverse City, Michigan, until police arrived, per local reports.

Perry’s actions didn’t go unnoticed. Local law enforcement and residents have hailed him as a hero, with the Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office praising the bystanders who stepped in. “What they did was amazing,” Sheriff Michael Shea said during a press conference. And he’s right—without Perry and the others, this could’ve been even worse.

As for the victims, the latest update (as of July 27) shows seven in fair condition and four still seriously injured, but thankfully, none are in critical condition anymore. Munson Medical Center, where they were treated, called their recovery “encouraging.” Meanwhile, Gille, who has a criminal history including assault and vandalism, now faces 11 counts of attempted murder, aggravated assault, and even a terrorism charge.

Why This Story Matters

Traverse City isn’t the kind of place where mass violence usually happens. It’s a lakeside town known for cherry festivals and wineries, not bloodshed in a Walmart. That’s why this attack has shaken the community to its core. But it’s also why Derrick Perry’s bravery stands out. In a split-second decision, he chose courage over fear, proving that heroes don’t always wear uniforms—sometimes, they’re just ordinary people who refuse to look away.

Could this have ended differently? Absolutely. If Perry hadn’t been there, if others hadn’t stepped up, the toll might’ve been higher. But here’s the takeaway: in a world where bad news dominates, stories like Perry’s remind us that good people still exist. And sometimes, they’re the only thing standing between chaos and survival.

So here’s to Derrick Perry, the ex-Marine who helped save a town. Traverse City won’t forget him anytime soon.
