A Lasting Bond with His First Love, Rhonda

Thomas Massie’s story is inextricably linked with that of his first wife, Rhonda Howard Massie. Their bond was one that formed early, beginning when they were just teenagers. They first met at Lewis County High School in Vanceburg, Kentucky, and even attended their prom together, a sweet start to a lifelong partnership. Both academically gifted, they went on to attend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where both earned engineering degrees. Their connection was not only romantic but also professional; while in college, they launched a technology company called SensAble Devices, which they later sold in 2003. The couple sealed their youthful romance in marriage on August 28, 1993, at the Methodist church in Vanceburg.

Rhonda was much more than a congressman’s wife; she was described by those who knew her as a brilliant and kind-hearted woman. Thomas himself publicly honored her as his “beautiful and wise queen,” the “smartest, kindest woman I ever knew,” and a devoted mother to their four children. She was the valedictorian of their high school class and had been accepted to both MIT and Harvard, ultimately earning a mechanical engineering degree from MIT. Friends and colleagues remembered her for her charitable spirit, with Kentucky Senate Majority Floor Leader Damon Thayer noting how her homemade pies would fetch high bids at local political dinners.

Tragedy struck in June 2024 when Rhonda passed away unexpectedly at the age of 51. The congressman announced her death on social media, sharing that she had died the previous day, on June 27, 2024. Her obituary did not list a cause of death, and no public report has ever confirmed what led to her passing. In the wake of her death, Thomas Massie addressed swirling rumors online, stating that Rhonda had not received any Covid-19 vaccinations and that an autopsy had been completed, though the results were still pending at the time of his statement.

He emphasized that her death was a devastating personal loss, and no law enforcement agency has suggested any foul play was involved. The couple had been married for over 30 years, raising four kids—Justin, Mason, Sarah, and Elizabeth—and had been blessed with three grandchildren.

A New Chapter with Carolyn Grace Moffa

In the fall of 2025, Thomas Massie announced he was beginning a new chapter in his life. He married Carolyn Grace Moffa, a former staffer for Senator Rand Paul, in a civil ceremony in Kentucky on October 19, 2025. The couple later celebrated with a Christian wedding ceremony in Pennsylvania, Carolyn’s home state. Their connection was not a new one; Massie shared that he had met Carolyn professionally more than a decade prior, when she worked on agricultural policy for Senator Paul. In fact, she had even visited Thomas and Rhonda on their cattle farm years earlier.

The wedding was an intimate affair attended by close friends and several fellow lawmakers, including Senator Rand Paul and Representatives Jim Jordan, Warren Davidson, Marjorie Taylor Greene, and Victoria Spartz. In a charming personal touch, Massie revealed that he proposed to Carolyn on the steps of the Library of Congress, which was the location of their first date.

He also noted that their wedding reception featured raw milk and margaritas made with peaches from their farm, a nod to their shared interests. As he steps into this new marriage, Massie continues to honor the memory of his first wife, Rhonda, publicly stating that he still misses her every day.
