From “Spy Kids” to Soulmates: Meghan’s Husband, Daryl Sabara

Meghan Trainor is married to actor Daryl Sabara, and their meet-cute is something straight out of a movie. The pair first met at a party in 2014, and Trainor, a self-professed fan, immediately walked up to him and asked, “Are you Spy Kids?” That initial fangirl moment quickly blossomed into a serious relationship. Daryl Sabara is best known for his childhood role as Juni Cortez in the popular Spy Kids film franchise, but his career spans much wider. He’s also the voice behind the Hero Boy in the animated classic The Polar Express and has appeared in numerous other TV shows and movies, from Friends to Wizards of Waverly Place.

The couple got engaged in December 2017 and tied the knot a year later on December 22, 2018, which also happened to be Trainor’s 25th birthday. Sabara isn’t just an actor; he’s also a key part of Trainor’s musical life. She has revealed that he sings backup on her songs and even co-writes music with her, calling it a “dream come true” for him. Their partnership extends into all areas of life.

In a candid reveal, they shared on their podcast that they both used the weight loss medication Mounjaro to help them on their health journey, with Trainor sweetly noting, “Daryl and I both do everything together.” For Sabara, becoming a father was particularly meaningful, as he didn’t have a dad growing up. He has said that fatherhood has given him “this existential experience of getting to become the dad that I always wanted.”

Meet the Kids: Riley and Barry

Meghan Trainor and Daryl Sabara are proud parents to two sons, and their names have a special connection. The couple has a noted fondness for “B” names, which influenced their choice for their youngest.

  • Riley: The couple’s first son, Riley, was born on February 8, 2021. Now a preschooler, Riley is already a soccer enthusiast, and Trainor has fully embraced the “soccer mom” lifestyle, cheering him on from the sidelines. He’s also had the adorable experience of watching his dad’s old movies. Riley has seen Spy Kids a few times, but he doesn’t call it by its title; he refers to it as “Baby Dada.” Trainor even bought vintage Spy Kids action figures on eBay so the boys could have toys of their father’s character.
  • Barry: The family welcomed their second son, Barry Bruce Trainor, on July 1, 2023. His birth date holds a special significance for the couple, as it also marks the anniversary of their first date seven years prior. Barry was born via a planned C-section because he was in a transverse (sideways) position, and Trainor was thrilled to finally experience skin-to-skin contact with her newborn, something she didn’t get to do with Riley, who spent time in the NICU. Trainor has described Barry as having a different temperament than his older brother, noting that he cries more and had an upset tummy as a baby, joking that her second child is “testing me.”

Despite the challenges of having two young kids, the brothers share an incredibly close bond. Meghan Trainor has posted videos of their first meeting, showing Riley being “so gentle, sweet, and absolutely in love with his new best friend.” The singer, who has expressed hopes for having more children in the future, is clearly living her dream as a happy and devoted “boy mom.”
