Karl-Anthony Towns, known to basketball fans as “KAT,” is a star center for the New York Knicks and one of the most skilled big men in the NBA. But beneath the accolades and the jaw-dropping stats lies a story deeply rooted in a unique and loving family. The pillars of his life have always been his parents: his father, Karl Towns Sr., and his late mother, Jacqueline Cruz. Their diverse backgrounds and unwavering support have been instrumental in shaping the man and the athlete he is today. To truly understand KAT, you have to look at the people who raised him.

He was born on November 15, 1995, in Edison, New Jersey, and grew up immersed in two distinct cultures. This bicultural upbringing—blending his father’s African-American heritage with his mother’s Dominican roots—gave him a rich and unique worldview. It’s the foundation upon which he has built his career, a journey that started early and has now made him a household name. The values instilled by his parents, from discipline and hard work to a deep love for family, are evident in every aspect of his life, both on and off the court.

Family Heritage and Early Life

The blend of cultures is central to the Towns family story. Karl-Anthony Towns’s father, Karl Towns Sr., is an African-American who played basketball at Monmouth University. Standing 6 feet 0 inches (1.82 m) tall, he later became a basketball coach and was the driving force behind Karl-Anthony’s early training regimen.

In a testament to his blended identity, Towns chose to represent the Dominican Republic internationally, a decision he made to honor his mother’s side of the family. His mother, Jacqueline Cruz, was a native of the Dominican Republic and worked as a nurse. She was the heart of the family, infusing their home with Dominican culture, including traditional dishes like arroz con pollo and the sounds of bachata and merengue music at lively family gatherings.

This strong sense of family was further enriched by his siblings. Karl-Anthony has two sisters, Lachelle and Malaika (who is sometimes referred to as Malaika Singleton-Towns). He is very close to them, and they have been a consistent source of support throughout his life. In fact, it was his older sister, Lachelle, who, along with his mother, suggested the name “Anthony” to add flair to his first name. The entire household was a team, with his parents guiding his athletic and personal development while his sisters provided love and encouragement.

The Pillars Behind the Star

Karl Towns Sr. and Jacqueline Cruz were a formidable team. His father was his first coach and primary disciplinarian, instilling in him a legendary work ethic that included a grueling routine of 1,000 jump shots a day, six days a week. As an American citizen, Karl Sr. provided the structure and basketball IQ that turned raw talent into elite skill. On the other hand, his mother, with her Dominican nationality, was the emotional anchor, known for her warmth and for being a constant, loving presence.

Tragically, Jacqueline Cruz passed away in April 2020 at the age of 59 after a battle with COVID-19. Her loss was devastating for the family, and Towns has been open about the grief and the motivation he draws from her memory. He continues to honor her legacy, both through his play on the court and his advocacy work off of it. While her exact height is not publicly documented, her enormous impact on his life is immeasurable. The parents’ nationalities are clear: his father is American, and his mother was Dominican. Together, they created a legacy of hard work, cultural pride, and resilience that Karl-Anthony Towns carries with him every time he steps onto the hardwood.
