J.J. Spaun’s journey as a professional golfer has been shaped by talent, determination, and an unwavering support system at home. At the heart of this foundation is his wife, Melody Spaun (née Means), a woman who wasn’t initially drawn to golf but has since become an integral part of his life and career. Their love story began in Orange County, California, where they met through mutual friends.
When Spaun, thinking his career would impress her, mentioned he was a professional golfer on their first date, Melody was unfazed. “I don’t even know. What does that mean? Like, does that mean you’re like rich or something?” she had asked, bluntly cutting through any illusions of grandeur. Despite her initial indifference to the sport, she grew to appreciate the dedication it required and, over time, became his biggest supporter.
Inside J.J. Spaun’s Marriage to Melody Spaun and Their Two Adorable Kids
The couple tied the knot in 2019, marking the beginning of a new chapter in their lives. Their marriage brought stability to Spaun’s whirlwind career, and soon, their family began to grow. In 2020, they welcomed their first child, a daughter named Emerson Lili. Parenthood brought its own challenges, but it also added purpose and perspective to Spaun’s life on and off the course. Three years later, on June 21, 2023, their second daughter, Violet Windsor Spaun, was born, further enriching their family dynamic.

Despite the demanding schedule of a PGA Tour professional, Spaun has made it a priority to balance his time between the golf course and his family. This balance is largely credited to Melody’s “five-hour rule,” a guideline she set for him whenever the family traveled together for tournaments. “Maybe I should stick to it. Five hours allotment of like, OK, you get five hours. You got to be back by this time, because sometimes I can get like stuck out here for a long time,” Spaun admitted.
The rule wasn’t set in stone, though. Melody jokingly allowed for adjustments if he started missing too many cuts, saying, “Well, yeah, if you start missing some cuts, we can adjust; we can add a couple hours there.” This dynamic between them has helped maintain a healthy work-life balance, ensuring that Spaun remains present in his children’s lives despite his demanding career.
Family has always been an important part of J.J.’s identity. He was born on August 21, 1990, in Los Angeles, California, to John Michael Spaun Sr. and Dollie Spaun. His diverse heritage includes Filipino and Mexican roots from his mother’s side, with his maternal grandparents emigrating from Victoria, Tarlac, in the Philippines.
Growing up, Spaun was deeply influenced by his parents, particularly his mother, who was an avid golfer herself. Even while she was eight months pregnant with him, she continued to play, and it seemed destined that Spaun would one day follow in her footsteps. His father, a hospital administrator, and his mother, an office manager, provided a stable and supportive environment, fostering his early passion for the sport.
His professional journey has been anything but linear. After graduating from San Dimas High School in 2008, he played collegiate golf at San Diego State University, where he became a two-time All-Mountain West Conference selection and was named Conference Player of the Year in 2012. Turning professional in 2012, he worked his way through PGA Tour Canada and the Korn Ferry Tour before earning his PGA Tour card in 2017.

However, in 2021, he lost his PGA Tour status after dropping outside the top 500 in the Official World Golf Ranking. Determined to fight his way back, he finished second at the Albertsons Boise Open, regaining his tour card. The pinnacle of his career came in April 2022, when he won the Valero Texas Open—his first PGA Tour victory after 147 starts.
J.J. Spaun’s Greatest Victory is the Unwavering Love and Support of His Family
Beyond golf, Spaun is a devoted family man. His social media posts often reflect his deep appreciation for Melody and their kids. On Valentine’s Day in 2019, he playfully referred to Melody as his “laundrywoman, barista, travel agent, #1 supporter, and fiancée,” emphasizing how integral she was to his life. Two years later, on Mother’s Day, he honored her with another heartfelt message: “Happy Mother’s Day to the best mom in the world! Thank you for all you do for our little family.”
Melody, who prefers to keep her personal life private, has nonetheless been spotted at various tournaments, cheering on her husband and supporting him through the highs and lows of his career.

Through the years, Melody has adapted to the lifestyle that comes with being married to a professional athlete. When she first attended a tournament in 2016—the Northern Trust Open, now known as the Genesis Invitational—she found the experience intimidating. But as time passed, she grew accustomed to the fast-paced world of professional golf, and now she’s fully embraced it. “She’s a 10. She’s a 10. A 10. Like as far as like accepting the lifestyle,” the golfer once said proudly.
J.J. Spaun’s career continues to evolve, but one thing remains constant—his unwavering commitment to his family. Whether he’s on the course competing against the world’s best or at home playing with his daughters, he understands the importance of balance. As he pursues further success on the PGA Tour, he does so with the knowledge that his greatest victories are not just in golf but in the love and support of his wife and children—nothing truly beats that.
