Whether it was a whirlwind romance or a slow-burning connection, each love story in Angie’s life carried significance and left its mark on her journey. Through the ups and downs, she remained hopeful, believing in the power of love despite its challenges.

Who Was Angie Stone’s Husband, Rodney Stone?

Angie Stone’s most well-documented relationship was with her ex-husband, Rodney Stone, better known as Lil’ Rodney C! of the pioneering hip-hop group Funky Four Plus One. The two got married in the early 1980s, a time when hip-hop was still in its infancy and Angie was part of The Sequence, one of the first all-female rap groups. Their relationship led to the birth of their daughter, Diamond, in 1984. However, as their respective careers took them in different directions, their marriage didn’t stand the test of time. A few years after Diamond’s birth, the couple decided to part ways and filed for divorce.

Despite their separation, Angie and Rodney remained linked through their daughter, Diamond, who would later follow in her mother’s footsteps, contributing background vocals to Angie’s 2007 song Baby. Rodney, meanwhile, faded into the background of Angie’s story, though his contributions to hip-hop history remained intact.

After her divorce, Angie’s romantic journey took a new turn in the 1990s when she found herself entangled in a relationship with none other than neo-soul superstar Michael “D’Angelo” Archer. Their romance was intense, passionate, and, at times, tumultuous. Angie was in her early 30s when she started dating the then 19-year-old D’Angelo.

At that time, he was still an up-and-coming artist, a young man with glasses and baggy pants who had yet to become the glamour icon the world would later recognize. Angie, who had already made her mark in the industry, saw something special in him and helped shape his career. She not only supported him emotionally but also played a significant role in his artistic development. She co-wrote songs for his albums, including his 1995 debut Brown Sugar, and even provided background vocals for his tours.

Their relationship reached another level in 1998 when they welcomed their son, Michael D’Angelo Archer II. However, as D’Angelo’s career skyrocketed, their relationship became strained. The pressures of fame, coupled with personal differences, led to their eventual breakup. Despite parting ways romantically, Angie and D’Angelo maintained a co-parenting relationship for the sake of their son. She spoke about their connection in interviews, explaining that their bond was one of deep respect and understanding, even if it wasn’t always smooth. “D’Angelo and I are parents first,” she once said. “For the sake of my son, I would never disrespect his father.”

Following her relationship with D’Angelo, Angie entered into another significant romance, this time with her manager, Ashanti Graves. Their relationship, which began in the mid-2000s, was serious enough for them to get engaged. However, things took a turn when Angie discovered that Ashanti was still legally married to another woman when they started dating.

The revelation shook their relationship, and after nearly a decade together, they broke up in 2014. Angie later spoke about the betrayal, recalling how she had believed Ashanti was divorced when they met. “Come to find out, he was still married to the woman. After I was in it for about three years, I found out…” she shared during an interview. This heartbreak seemed to mark the end of Angie’s public romantic relationships.

Angie Stone Never Remarried After Divorcing Rodney Stone

In the years that followed, the multimillionaire Angie remained focused on her music, her children, and her career. She never remarried, nor was she publicly linked to anyone else after her split from Ashanti. Her daughter, Diamond, and her son, Michael, remained central figures in her life, despite past struggles—like a well-publicized 2015 altercation between Angie and Diamond that led to the singer’s arrest. Despite the ups and downs, Angie was always fiercely protective of her family, maintaining that love was the foundation of everything she did.

Her tragic passing on March 1, 2025, in a car accident in Montgomery, Alabama, left a void in the music industry and in the hearts of those who loved her. At the time of her death, she was returning to Atlanta after a performance in Alabama. Her daughter Diamond confirmed the news on Facebook, writing, “My mommy is gone.” While Angie Stone’s personal life had its fair share of heartbreaks, betrayals, and separations, one thing remained constant—her unwavering love for her children and her passion for music.
