The journey of Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Tez Johnson to the NFL is one of extraordinary talent, resilience, and the powerful redefinition of family. His path from a challenging childhood in Alabama to catching passes on football’s biggest stage is intertwined with a deeply personal story of adoption, sacrifice, and unconditional support. At the heart of this narrative are two families—his biological relatives and his adoptive parents—whose collective love and belief paved the way for his dreams to become reality.
His story is a powerful testament to the idea that family is not always defined by blood, but often by the people who choose to step in, provide stability, and help write a brighter chapter. This unique support system fueled Johnson’s rise, transforming a young boy captivated by the flashy uniforms of the Oregon Ducks into a record-setting player for that very team and now a promising professional athlete.

Roots and Resilience: Biological Family and Early Life
Tez Johnson was born Keyonteze Johnson on May 18, 2002, in Birmingham, Alabama. His early life was marked by profound loss and hardship. His biological father died by suicide when Tez was just an infant, leaving his mother, Shamika Johnson, to raise him and his siblings alone. Shamika had not yet finished high school and faced significant challenges in finding stable work to support her family. They lived in what Tez describes as “the trenches” of Birmingham—a neighborhood filled with the constant threat of violence and limited opportunities.
Fearing for her son’s future and wanting to save him from a path that could lead to jail, Shamika made an incredibly difficult and selfless decision when Tez was a teenager. She gave her blessing for him to move in with his high school football coach’s family, the Nixes, hoping they could provide the structure and support she felt unable to offer at the time.

A New Chapter: Adoption and a Forged Brotherhood
As a high school student facing academic and behavioral struggles, Tez Johnson’s life transformed when he moved in with the family of his teammate and quarterback, Bo Nix. What began as a temporary arrangement suggested by Bo’s father, Coach Patrick Nix, quickly became a permanent home. Tez was never formally legally adopted, but the Nix family—Patrick, Krista, and their children—welcomed him as one of their own in every sense of the word. Krista Nix has clarified, “He does not wear ‘Nix’ on the back of his jersey… But in our household and in our hearts, he is a Nix.”
This new environment provided the stability Tez needed to thrive. He has recalled the profound impact of simple moments, like his first family dinner at the Nixes’ table, something he wasn’t accustomed to. Living with the Nixes also solidified a unique brotherhood with Bo Nix. The two developed an incredible chemistry on the field, leading Pinson Valley High School to a state championship and eventually reuniting as record-breaking teammates at the University of Oregon. Their bond, forged in high school, has continued into the NFL, with Bo now a quarterback for the Denver Broncos and Tez catching touchdowns for the Buccaneers.
Johnson’s story beautifully illustrates that family can be expansive. He has often stated, “I’ve got two moms… I have a stepdad and a dad, so I have two dads. And I have seven siblings.” From a childhood of uncertainty to a future filled with promise, Tez Johnson carries the love and sacrifice of both of his families with him on every step of his remarkable journey.
