Fernando Mendoza’s drive and determination were cultivated at home by his parents, Elsa and Dr. Fernando Mendoza Sr. His mother, Elsa, is a University of Miami graduate who holds an MBA. She often recalls that from a very young age, whenever Fernando set his mind to something, he would go all in without any thought of quitting. This mentality was put to the test early in his football career.

As an 11-year-old playing his first season of tackle football, a frustrated Fernando, who was stuck deep on the depth chart, wanted to quit. His parents, however, would not allow it. They insisted he finish the season, teaching him a pivotal lesson in perseverance. He gave maximum effort, earned more playing time, and the experience shaped his approach to every challenge that followed.

His father, Dr. Fernando Mendoza Sr., has served as a daily example of how to perform under pressure. As the pediatric emergency director at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital in Miami, he handles life-and-death situations. Fernando has openly expressed how his father’s career puts the pressure of a football game into perspective, teaching him how to stay calm no matter the circumstances.

This combination of his mother’s insistence on dedication and his father’s example of calm competence has been instrumental in shaping Fernando’s character. Their guidance is evident in his academic achievements as well; he earned his business administration degree from the prestigious Haas School of Business at Cal in just three years while simultaneously managing his football career.

Sibling Bond and Cultural Heritage: Brothers on and off the Field

Fernando’s family extends onto the Indiana football roster, where his younger brother, Alberto Mendoza, is also a quarterback for the Hoosiers. The Mendoza brothers share a bond that goes beyond the typical sibling relationship; they are teammates, roommates, and best friends who constantly push each other to improve.

Their connection created a historic moment during a game against Kennesaw State, when they became the first set of brothers to throw a touchdown pass in the same game for the same team since 2015. Fernando’s visible joy, celebrating with a chest bump after Alberto’s first collegiate touchdown, highlighted the depth of their partnership. Fernando’s decision to transfer to Indiana was significantly influenced by the opportunity to play with his brother, whom he described as the person who pushes him the hardest.

Their partnership is fueled by a shared cultural pride. Both brothers wear their Cuban heritage as a “huge point of pride.” All four of their grandparents were born in Cuba—three in Havana and one in Santiago—and their journey as immigrants laid a foundation for the family. Fernando has spoken about his profound gratitude for the sacrifices his grandparents made, leaving everything behind to build a new future for their family. To deepen their connection to their roots, Fernando and Alberto took a transformative trip to Cuba with their grandfather, where they met relatives who had stayed behind.

This experience, combined with growing up in Miami’s vibrant Cuban community, has ensured that the Mendoza brothers remain closely connected to their culture, a driving force in their lives and a key part of their inspiring story.
